The General Foundation Programme is a pre-sessional English course that prepares students linguistically and culturally in English, Mathematics, and Information Technology. The Programme gives students the chance to settle into college life and learn necessary study skills that are embedded throughout the programme modules. The programme focuses on competencies and knowledge as students’ progress to one of Muscat College’s bachelor programmes delivered in partnerships held by the College.

Programme Delivery:

The Programme is based on the Global Scale of English (GSE), the world’s first global English language standard that allows the measurement of progress accurately and easily. The GSE is aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference of languages (CEFR). The Programme is also guided by the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) in the Oman Academic Standards for the General Foundation Programme.

Duration:

The Programme is delivered over four semesters in an academic year: Semesters 1 to 3: 11 weeks and Summer Semester: 9 weeks.
Students may study three levels in any of the four semesters. Summer semester is for students who are in Level 3 of all modules.
The total contact hours in all three levels: Level 1, 2 and 3 are the same for both full-time and part-time students. A total of 26 contact hours per week:

  • English: 20 contact hours per week
  • Information Technology: 2 contact hours per week
  • Mathematics: 4 contact hours per week

Yearly Intakes:

There are three intakes per academic year: September, December, and March.

Students who have successfully completed the General Education Diploma, or obtained equivalent certificates approved by the Ministry of Education in Oman, and who apply for admission to the College, are eligible to take placement tests to gain entry into the GFP.

English is the medium of study at Muscat College and therefore on admission to the College you will be required to take a placement test in English, Mathematics, and Information Technology to determine your level and in which level you will be placed depending on the result of the test.
Candidates who meet the General Foundation Programme exit requirements or have an equivalent score recognized by Muscat College can join the undergraduate Programmes.
